General Instructions For Earth Works Within Industry

By Ricky Andrews

On completion of setting out each portion of the Works the Contractor shall notify the Superintendent, and shall obtain the Superintendent's permission to proceed with excavation. At his discretion the Superintendent may check the Contractor's setting out, but any such check by the Superintendent shall not relieve the Contractor of his responsibility to set out the works. Should the Superintendent give the Contractor permission to proceed without checking the setting out, this will in no way relieve the Contractor of his responsibility to set out the Works.

Should the Superior give the Vendor permission to proceed without checking the setting out, this will in no way relieve the Vendor of his responsibility to prepare the Projects. In rock excavation, where over break occurs as a result of blasting or breaking, the resulting loose and fractured rock will be removed and the over excavation will be filled with lean mix concrete, except when otherwise directed by the Superior.

Should any destruction occur all associated repair expense will be at the Supplier's expense. The Supplier will excavate by any method elected provided that the method will result in work conforming to the requirements herein; will conform to all lawful safety requirements; and will not cause destruction or interference to adjacent construction work, the plant or its normal operation. Pumps will not discharge into existing operating locations of the plant nor on to adjacent work locations. The Supplier will carry out all excavation under well drained circumstances.

Excavations shall be accurately finished to lines, levels and grades as shown on the drawings. Excavations for footings, foundations and walls which are carried below the specified levels shall be filled with lean mix concrete at the Contractor's expense unless other fill material is approved by the Superintendent. Filling shall be at the Contractor's expense unless otherwise approved by the Superintendent.

Excavations for footings, foundations and walls which are carried below the specified levels will be filled with lean mix concrete at the Supplier's expense except when other fill dirt is approved by the Supervisor. Filling will be at the Supplier's expense except when otherwise approved by the Supervisor.

Pumps will not discharge into existing operating areas of the plant nor on to adjacent project areas. The bases of completed excavations will be inspected by the Superior to determine whether the exposed dirt is adequate or unsuitable for the required bearing purpose. Additional excavation may be directed by the Superior. Excavations for footings, foundations and walls which are carried below the specified heights will be filled with lean mix concrete at the Vendor's cost except when other fill dirt is approved by the Superior. Filling will be at the Vendor's cost except when otherwise approved by the Superior. The bottoms of completed excavations will be kept free and washed of loose dirt, water, other liquid and rubbish and will be kept free from trafficking.
