Why Water Heater Maintenance

By Brian Winters

A water heater doesn't usually get much attention until it stops supplying enough hot water for you and your family. Not performing water heater maintenance can cause the internal components to rust in the long run. When this happens, the water heater will eventually consume more energy as the sediments lessen its heating efficiency. Rust and corrosion can shorten the lifespan of your water heater in no time. At this point, consider buying a replacement heater to continue having access to hot water.

Believe it or not, regular draining and flushing of the water heater can extend its life for a couple of years. Keep in mind that sediments sitting at the bottom of the tank can eat the internal components and tank lining once they are left inside for a long time. Experts recommend flushing the water heater on a semi-annual basis to prevent sediments from building up.

Energy costs can also be reduced by sustaining its heating efficiency. You can do this by flushing the hard water minerals inside, making it easier for the unit to heat warm water. Flushing and draining is an important maintenance step since it keeps the water heater running smoothly.

Draining your tank can boost its heating efficiency as it removes 95% of the sediments lying at the bottom of the tank. To avoid scalding burns, turn off the water heater the night before draining it. Doing this also saves water and electricity at the same time.

If the sediments continue to build up even after draining the tank, it is possible that your anode rod has fully deteriorated. This sacrificial rod should be checked regularly since it absorbs all the charged water molecules that develop every time minerals start to precipitate. This anode rod can minimize the sediments inside, thus protecting the internal lining from rusting completely. Fighting against rust and corrosion is one of the most important reasons why regular maintenance is a must.

Always make sure the T&P valve is working at all times since this valve is designed to release excessive pressure inside the tank, protecting it from overheating and blowing up. It helps adjusting the thermostat settings between 120 to 130 degrees Fahrenheit to minimize the relief valve from opening.

Water leaking issues can also be prevented through proper care and maintenance. The plumbing connections and pipe fittings should always be tightened properly to avoid affecting other areas of the unit. Using a leaking water heater for a long time can cause further damage, eventually allowing sediments to eat through your internal tank. At this point, you are left with no option but to replace the water heater.

Performing regular water heater maintenance has several benefits that can keep your unit in tip-top shape. For guaranteed results, it is best to consult a specialist if you need help in maintaining your water heater. Proper care and maintenance are needed if you don't want to spend too much on water heater repairs.
