The Types And Importance Of Protective Clothing And Equipment In Industry

By Amanda Baird

Most people know that industry is much different now than it was 100 years ago. Employers are required to make their employees wear protective clothing and different safety equipment to prevent them from getting hurt. This can be as basic as a smock and Kevlar gloves for people cutting meat to a full blown fire retardant jump suit and ear plugs for race car drivers. There are many different types and reasons for people to use this clothing so they do not get hurt.

In some environments there will exist the possibility of various hazardous situations. This possibility exists in every work environment. Flying debris, dangerous chemicals, loud noises, blood and body fluids are all major hazards to the body. In reducing the number of people that are getting hurt, companies will save more money on their deductibles and copay for their employees every year.

There are many factors that are always considered before people begin looking for the best protection for any job. Take a few moments to consider what industry the employees will be working in. Once this is discovered it is basic to figure out any hazards they need protection from. There are several federal regulations to help with regulating the use of safety equipment with employees.

The most commonly misused forms of safety equipment are ear plugs and safety glasses. Often workers will wear safety glasses on their head or around the neck. It is difficult to protect the eyes in these places. Ear plugs are often put in wrong so they are only slightly effective. A good starting point is regular training for workers to use earplugs correctly.

With the rise in blood born illnesses and knowledge about other infective agents any body fluid is now considered a serious biohazard. Latex gloves, face shields, heavy gowns, and disinfectant are just some of the tools people use to protect themselves from these infectious agents. These are not just used in hospitals either. They are used in most factories, schools, hotels and carried by almost all cops on patrol every day.

They can be found at many specialty stores which cater to selling protective equipment for employers. They can be found on several different web sites on the internet. There are many special outlet stores that will be happy to mail anyone catalogs that have safety items in them for people to browse and purchase.

With construction accidents rising both for employees in the field and along the highway more companies are implementing the use of reflective clothing. Generally reflective clothing helps people to stand out in low visibility working areas. This saves many lives and will make insurance rates down with lower deductibles for fewer hurt people and less accidents.

As important as protective clothing can be, the critical part of preventing anyone from getting hurt while working is the human brain with safety training. When someone stops thinking they often get careless and Careless people often get hurt. Using common sense with accident preventative training are key elements to keep all their employees safe the while working.
