Growing Plants In North Carolina

By Dawn Williams

Native plants naturally occur in one particular area, without human assistance. Native plants in North Carolina are well adapted to all physical and biological conditions there, such as soil, climate, insects and the company of other plants surrounding them. All those make them an ideal choice for every gardener. You can grow them easily, and contribute to your community at the same time.

Maintaining native plants is much easier, thanks to their climate and insect resistance. Besides, those plants are quite important to area wildlife as well, because they provide their food and natural shelter. When you decide to grow native plants, you contribute to your community by taking care of your natural heritage, and you also protect your environment.

North Carolina consists of four different climate regions, and they all support different plants. Mountains, for example, support mainly evergreens, thanks to their climate conditions, acidic soil and heights. Pines and hickories are perfectly happy there. Maple and hemlock rather live on moist slopes. Various flowering trees and wild flowers choose other areas.

There are more than four thousands native species there, and all have their special characteristics and beauty. Some of them are considered rare, maybe 700 of them. 160 species are especially rare or endangered, and, because of them, there are eighteen plant preserves in this state. Maybe the most interesting of all those species living there are incredibly beautiful wildflowers.

If you are primarily interested in planting small trees, maybe you should consider fringe tree or flowering dogwood. Persimmon and which-hazel will look very nice in every garden. If you combine these decorative deciduous sorts with some evergreens such as red cedar or maybe American holly, you can achieve very nice effects.

There are several very attractive large trees you can grow in your spacious garden. Tulip tree is very decorative, and everybody likes American lindens. Some other trees like Carolina hemlock and maybe Red spruce are also very good choice, especially if you are interested in achieving deep shade on your sunny greens.

You just cannot go wrong with shrubs, especially if they are decorative like Carolina rose and sweet fern. They are quite small, yes, but they really look beautiful. Larger shrubs such as sweet shrub and elderberry can also contribute to your garden's beauty, as well as Rose bay rhododendron or Flame azalea. Silky willow is much larger, but very attractive shrub.

Wide variety of wildflowers is something North Carolina is especially famous for. Wild Columbine, Green dragon and other popular species are very good choice, if you would like to have luxurious blooming garden. Lobelia is widely popular for its variety of colors and sizes, and geraniums are especially decorative in all ambiances.

If you don't have a large garden, or you are more interested in decorating your terrace or patio, maybe you should consider beautiful and decorative vines such as Virgin's bower or climbing hydrangea. Passion flower is always a very nice choice. In this wide variety of native plants in North Carolina, you will most certainly find something for yourself.
