The Advantages of Speech Therapy

By Kendrick Hoitt

Our day-to-day life is significantly affected by the way we converse. It is not evident but how we communicate impacts our relationship with others. However, because we are so used to it, we generally take our gift of speech for granted. What we fail to see is that not all people are blessed with this gift. Certain people get speech impairments from birth while others only obtain them from accidents of some sort. Either way, these people don't have the same privileges as we do. Fortunately, the problems of these people can now be dealt with by speech therapy.

Speech therapy is a branch of medicine that focuses on addressing the speech and language impairments of both kids and grownups alike. Like all kinds of disabilities, there are lots of different kinds of speech and language defects. These disorders are diagnosed and addressed by specialists called speech and language therapists (SLT). Naturally, a speech problem can not be cured immediately. In order for a continuing improvement, speech therapy must be a continuous procedure. Patients have to go to their therapists at least twice a week until they can function as normally as possible.

SLTs have considerably been in demand in the recent years. In contrast to an educator or a medical professional that can only practice in school or in the hospitals, SLT's are not limited to a single work environment. Instead of just working in a medical center or an institution, they can work in the two simultaneously, and can also even work in health centers or their patient's homes. In reality, they are not restricted to only one company! I even have a friend that works in a healthcare facility, a health care center, and home service all at once. Several of them are also self-employed, so they normally have their own times.

Being a speech therapist is no simple venture. Since most patients are diagnosed with major conditions, you would need to be really tolerant and persevering. If you want to last in this line of work, you would need to be committed in what you do. Not all speech therapists are levelheaded and collected. Those that are just in it for the money may even be insensitive and won't even care if the clients are improving or not. You should consequently make sure to decide on a therapist that is both educated and passionate about his or her vocation. A pleasing and collected attitude is also a plus.

Our gift of speech is something that we typically take for granted. We forget that there are people that aren't fortunate enough to be given the same gift. Fortuitously, the discovery of speech therapy has given these individuals hope that they could one day utilize their mouths and tongues as normally as we can. Not only are their oral skills improved but their self-esteem are also increased. Nevertheless, we should really be careful in picking the therapist to visit, because not all of them are passionate about their patients and their line of work.
