All You Need To Know About Carpet

By Rob Terry

Floor coverings are an important part of interior design and layout. Carpet is a common choice for many. With so many types, textures and colors, choices can sometimes be difficult. However, with some basic knowledge, selection is made a lot easier.

Any material is made up from the humble fiber. This is the basic building block. Binding fibers of any material together into strands means that they can be woven together. The pile is a term used to describe the thickness of the fibers which make up the finished product.

Cut pile is the most common type of floor covering on the market. Made from yarn which is twisted, and synthetic, cut pile is durable and long lasting. Some people find it too brittle, and this explains why it can be mainly used for very large work spaces. However, it is still a functional and useful temporary flooring solution for any home when needed. Velvet pile has a smoother surface, uses fiber which has more volume and is often laid in bedrooms. Shag pile contains very long and thick fiber and is now coming back into vogue.

A priority consideration is choosing a weave which will last longer. Olefin and other artificial fibers will always go a longer distance and be very hard-wearing. One of the biggest advantages of man-made fibers is that they come in a great range of color.

For those who want to get value for money, the best policy is to look at the material from which this traditional floor covering is made. Olefin and other artificial fibers are resilient. These man-made materials generally come in more brighter colors, too.

Carpet made from wool is one of the most expensive to buy. With a high pile density, the benefits of purchasing and laying a wool floor covering are many. Typically, it adds a softer and more luxurious feel to any room.
