Transform Your Master Bedroom Into A Retreat

By Vickie Daeley

In any given home, there are three places that enjoy the most use - the family room, the kitchen and the master bedroom. The master bedroom is a special space that should be a true respite from the rest of the world. Your interior designer can help make your dreams of creating an amazing master suite into a reality.

Before you have your first consultation with your designer, think about what you want to achieve with the design. Find some pictures and colors that showcase your style and bring them along to the meeting. If you are using your own existing furnishings, bring picture of these items. If the first consult is in your home, your designer will take measurements of the room and pieces of furniture.

One of your first big decisions will probably focus on the color of the room. Soothing tones work best in a master bedroom, as they create a warm, pleasing and relaxing ambiance. This might mean you stick with simple neutrals or an off-white hue or perhaps you would prefer a splash of color. You can choose soft pastel shades of blue or green or even a nice lilac. Lavender is darker, yet still soothing and even yellow is a solid choice. Although a cheery shade, yellow is still soothing and calming.

Furnishings are important and you will want pieces to coordinate and fit together. The bed, of course, is the centerpiece of the room, so this is the most important piece. There are tons of choices, from fabric backed headboards to simple and sleek modern designs to traditional poster and sleigh beds. Your designer can assist you in finding pieces of furniture that are both pleasing to the eye and timeless, pieces that you will want to keep for many years to come.

Choosing suitable linens and fabrics for drapes, throw pillows and comforters is another part of the design process. You can purchase pre-made items that fit in with your style choices and even opt for simple white linens and let the other elements of the room set the tone. Your designer also can help you find fabrics to create custom pillows and bedspreads that match your drapery. Using a designer is a huge plus in this area, as professional decorators know where to find the best fabrics, furnishings and accessories, often at lower prices than you might find yourself.

Accessories and artwork are the final touches of your special master bedroom. Find pieces that you love, but don't go overboard. You might choose a few carefully selected pieces of artwork or even some beautifully framed family photos, as well as a collection of aromatic candles. Talk to your designer and discuss what types of accessories are the best fit for your special master bedroom suite. The nice thing about these accessories is that they can be updated easily from time to time, giving your room a fresh, new look at relatively little expense.
