Brain Tumor Conditions & How Children May Be Helped

By Rob Sutter

I think that brain tumor conditions are some of the most severe since they can come about from seemingly anywhere. Adults and children alike can be stricken with this condition, which is difficult to comprehend. It's especially troubling when it comes to younger people because you want to believe that they can be helped much more easily than those who are older. I suppose one of the silver lines to consider is that research is constantly done in order to make efforts that much stronger.

According to a piece that was posted on NBC Southern California, research in terms of brain tumor conditions was helped after the unfortunate passing of seven-year-old McKenna Wetzel. It was learned that she had diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, which is a rare yet aggressive type of cancer. This cancer is also unique because, unlike most others, it actually wraps itself around the brain. Organizations along the lines of Voices Against Brain Cancer will be able to tell you that surgical operation can't be done without damaging the brain further.

After Wetzel passed away, it wasn't long until the area of research was helped. In essence, young patients can potentially benefit from the cures which Wetzel, unfortunately, was not afforded. The article talked about in detail, saying that a sample of her tumor was donated to a lab at Stanford University. There, scientists would be able to create cell lines from the tissues that are still living and bring them to other institutions so that unique medicines may be tested in more than one specific area.

Amongst all of the medical talk, though, I couldn't help but notice just how helpful the community was. They supported Wetzel after the news broke out about her condition and a good deal of money was raised for the sake of compensating for her medical bills. This was done through the actions of a block party which placed Wetzel at the center. A great deal of money was raised in order to help her, tens of thousands dollars to be more exact, which displays just how robust a sense of unity can be.

I am not going to dispute the idea that brain tumor conditions are serious ones but I think that the fact that so many people can come together to help is astounding. I find it to be uplifting that so many individuals in a city are so supportive of a cause that they will be able to band together for that one common purpose. With such support being seen, research is only going to be more effective. In my mind, beneficial results will most certainly come to fruition.
