Information On How To Acquire A Mobile Crane Operator Certification

By Lela Perkins

With massive development in the construction industry, heavy construction materials can now be lifted and taken to top floors of sky scrapers. All this has been made possible with the invention of mobile cranes. Such machines have enabled contractors to hoist, load and offload hefty objects while developing a building or delivering products from site of production to construction sites. However, for anyone to operate such machinery, he must have a mobile crane operator certification.

There are many people out there wondering what the importance of crane certification is. First certification ensures that an operator is skilled enough to operate and will at all times ensure safety while working. Without training a person may mishandle the machinery and this may lead to injury of people around and even property destruction.

Where does one take such training? This is simple; at a training institute offering a program in crane management. But people must ensure to go to well known institutes anywhere in the country. For one to know if an institution is reputable, there are certain features that one must look out for.

The first aspect to look for in the institution is authorization by a necessary board to provide training and the fee structure if it is approved. The next feature to look for is if the institution provides specialized training aside from the main program of study. Also the individual should inquire if the syllabus integrates both class work and practical work as well.

Upon getting an institution with all of these qualities, an individual can then begin the course. During class work, one will be taught about the policies that regulate this industry. Such policies include; maneuvering procedures, safety regulations, specialized industry settings and many other policies as set out by the government. These policies are in accordance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).

After learning class work as well as the field practical, a person will have to sit for a written and practical examination. This examination is usually given by the crane institute of America certification (CIC). The CIC is the only board entrusted with accreditation of mobile crane operators. The licensing by this board is done to only those who pass the written and also practical exams.

Later after one has been employed and practicing, the individual will be required to undergo refresher training program. The aim of this is to improve further the knowledge, skills and experience one has in this field. The reason for this is due to the ever changing needs and requirements in this field. Also technological advancement in this industry reinforces the importance for people to go for such trainings.

Getting a mobile crane operator certification is the only way to begin a career in this field. Once one has this, the individual will be allowed to practice and handle dangerous equipment. One must however ensure to always be physically fit to meet the day to day challenges in the field.
