An Overview Of The Common Categories Of Construction Equipment

By Halisse Enmma

Excavators, skid steer, loader and crane are just some of the common names of heavy equipment you might have heard of. In reality, the construction industry makes use of a long list of construction equipment that it would be difficult to name them all. But even if this is so, it is worth knowing that these pieces of equipment can fall under one of the general equipment categories.

And if you wish to learn this classification of heavy equipment, then check out the following. Quite commonly, equipment employed in construction can be classified as: earthmoving, material handling equipment, compaction and paving equipment, hauling equipment, aggregate production, and pumping equipment. Earthmoving equipment pertains to machines that are intended for digging or pushing earth. Under this are excavator, backhoe, drag line, bull dozer, power shovel and scrapers.

Another category of heavy equipment is the material handling equipment. Machines falling under this category are used to move, store, control and protect materials. Among these are the construction and industrial forklifts, cranes, dolly, hoists and pallet lift. Compacting and paving equipment comprise the next group of heavy equipment. Compaction is a term used to define the method of decreasing the air volume in hot mix asphalt pavement construction.

Under this category are plates and rollers. Other than the categories mentioned, there are also haulers. Hauling equipment is primarily used to transport building materials, carry and dispose excavated earth and haul heavy machines. Examples include the dump truck and the dumper, which are classified according to hoe they dump the load. There are side or rear and bottom dump trucks. The dumper is being applied to projects involving short hauls on rough roads.

Apart from these categories, you would find aggregate and concrete production equipment, which are used to literally make aggregate concrete. Examples of this are: jaw crusher, gyratory crusher, cone crusher, roll crusher, hammer mill and rod and ball mills. In addition, there is the pumping equipment, which is used to raise, compress or transfer fluids.

When you browse online to search, you would come across a selection of pumps, including centrifugal pump, diaphragm pump, submersible pump, test pump and well point dewatering. Discharge and suction hoses may also be included in the equipment inventory under this category. There are other categories of equipment that are employed in construction projects. But while you continue to check them out, it would help if you can also learn about safety equipment like fall protection lines and fire extinguishers. It will definitely be worth your time.
